A unique opportunity to gain valuable experience in the field of medical publishing and to have direct contact with professionals in the field. Interns are required to provide general office assistance to all departments (phones, faxing, filing, xeroxing) but are strongly encouraged to specify an interest in one of the departments mentioned below. All interns are always welcome to attend essential office meetings such as editorial, production and sales meetings. The ideal candidate will have strong computer, communication and organizational skills. Previous book or magazine experience and language skills (especially Spanish) are a plus but not required.

What we offer:
-Year-round full-time or part-time internships from a minimum of ten weeks to six months,
-a stipend to cover transportation expenses and lunch,

Avoid Nice-Sounding, But Empty, Resume Keywords

…avoid filling your resume with vague claims that hiring managers can easily see through or that may simply bore them. Scott Bennett, author of The Elements of Resume Style, suggests that resume writers use concrete examples of their skills and accomplishments to life on the page (or electronic resume).
For example, instead of saying “excellent organizational and time management skills”, you could say “supervised 35 major projects a year and completed half ahead of schedule and half on time.” The extra descriptive information paints a picture of an effective employee. In addition to the aforementioned words, CareerBuilder.com advises job hunters to avoid using the following words on resumes if possible:

10 Key Job Strategies

1. Get out of your comfort zone. Identify your transferrable skills and match them to promising jobs in other industries.
2. Stay flexible. Be open to at least considering any employment option- even if the job duties, salary, or benefits are not what you are looking for. This will help you get your foot in the door at a good company and possibly even find a job that you like even more than the one you envisioned.
3. Keep Networking. Tell everyone you know that you’re searching for a job. Use social networking sites such as LinkedIn and word of mouth.
4. Customize your resume. Don’t send out the same resume to every employer; match your skills and experiences with what the company is seeking in an employee.
5. Reduce gaps in work history. Try to stay busy during your time between jobs or after graduation. Consider temping, an internship, a part-time job, or even taking classes to improve your skills. This will show hiring managers that you were motivated during your time of unemployment.
6. Manage your electronic reputation. Don’t think your “private” life on the internet is safe from employers; a growing number are conducting background checks of potential employees on the internet.
7. Improve your marketability. Determine what skills are in-demand in your industry, and work to develop them. Take this time to improve your soft skills, as well as assess the appropriateness of your appearance and interview outfits.
8. Search for jobs before they’re advertised. Scan newspapers and trade journals to find companies that are hiring or expanding.
9. Search far and wide. Use every resource possible to find a job-ranging from general job boards and friends and family to trade associations and employment websites.
10. Meet with a recruiter. They may have comprehensive knowledge of job opportunities and trends in your industry, and may be able to help you hone your interviewing skills and improve your cover letter and resume.

Broadcasting Internship with the NY Giants!

The purpose of these internships is to provide a student the unique opportunity to help in the day to day operations of the entertainment department for an NFL Franchise while earning college credit.
The New York Football Giants Entertainment department encompasses television, website, radio, and game day presentation. We are responsible for producing two weekly television shows, Giants Training Camp show, video and audio presentation for stadium screens during home games, and all website related shows and video content.
These internships will begin in July and last till the end of the football season. We will try and be flexible with the schedule but these internships will involve working some Saturdays or Sundays during home games.

WBGO 88.3 FM radio is looking for interns to work at the radio station during the spring semester '09 and future semesters.

The internship is for college credit only. During the length of the internship, students will be allowed to go on field assignments with reporters, operate digital editing equipment, interview guests for the various news shows that are broadcasted, e.g. "The WBGO Journal" "Newark Today with Mayor Cory Booker" etc., and do on-air news broadcasts. Students will also get a chance to work in other departments at the radio station, e.g.: advertising, marketing, news room, etc.

Videographer/Editor Apprentice
The CareerTV Videographer / Editor Apprentice Program is a semester long, training program for aspirant Broadcast Journalists. Successful candidates will gain hands on experience shooting, editing, uploading and presenting stories for air on CareerTV.com. The successful candidate will work directly with anchors, reporters, producers, and technical and support staff to produce daily and weekly career news content. This content will be reviewed and critiqued by CareerTV staff on a weekly basis to help the candidate develop his or her unique shooting and editing style.

Qualifications:

Must be a Sophomore, Junior, or Senior at an accredited college or university to apply
Must receive college credit for the apprenticeship
Communications, Media, Journalism, Film, and Broadcasting majors preferred
Ability to work at least 16 hours a week
Must be willing to travel by train or car throughout the tri-state area
Must be willing to carry 20 - 30 pounds of gear during field production shoots
Experience with video cameras, Final Cut Editing Software, and Mac applications a plus

These are all reasonable worries. Personally, I worry about something else—on behalf of job-seekers everywhere. I worry that they'll tumble into The Vortex and accept a job they should have scorned.

What's The Vortex? It's the set of forces that overtakes a job seeker when he or she is deep into the selection process, somewhere between the first and third interviews, when the employer begins to send signals that he's interested. The Vortex is deadly, because in the face of all that approval and positive feedback (way more, in many cases, than we get on our jobs most of the time), it's easy to lose one's head. It's easy to overlook slights and red flags that should warn us away from dangerous waters. It's easy to get sucked into The Vortex and let our brains override what our instincts are telling us: that no matter how much wining and dining and affirmation is involved, some companies don't deserve our talents.
Charm Offensive
If we end up taking a job because of Vortex effects, we'll regret it, and we know it. That's why we've created this list of Six Reasons to Run from a job opportunity, no matter how pleasant and charming the company representatives are, and no matter how much latte, red wine, and discussion of end-of-year bonuses is involved.
(You'll see that our list makes liberal use of the notion of Strong Mutual Interest. Each of us must determine on our own when SMI has been established, but it usually happens between the first and second interviews.)
Here's our list of Six Reasons to Run:
1) Your employment references are requested before a strong mutual interest is established.
Any employer who values a job candidate also values his or her time and relationships. When a headhunter or company recruiter tells you "We'll need to call your references" too early in the game, they're sending a signal that the valuable time of your reference-givers is not nearly as valuable as the time that the company would waste in interviewing you before checking up on you. Your cue to bail.
2) The employer asks for your Social Security number or your approval for a credit or background check before strong mutual interest is established.
When a company says, "We need to check on you before we can spare the time to talk with you," it's time to get out of Dodge. A talent-focused employer will call you for a phone interview (at a minimum) before bothering you for personal information that they won't require if they don't make you a job offer. This type of batch processing shouts, "Get in line to genuflect." Keep looking.
3) You're sent a questionnaire (not a job application) or online test to complete before you've had any human contact with the employer, including a phone call.
When a company makes its selection process more efficient by shoving tests in your face before so much as chatting with you, they're sharing their views on reciprocity. "Prove to us that you're worth our time" is not the message that a talent-aware employer sends to the talented people applying to use their talents on its behalf. Reciprocity works in the same that permission-based marketing does; you give something to get something at every step in the process. A smarter company will chat with you, answer your questions about the job, and then ask, "Would you mind filling out our questionnaire, as the next step in the process? Can I answer any questions for you, to help you feel comfortable investing more time in our company?"

4) Unreasonable or short notice to travel for interview.
The Vortex becomes more powerful over time, and many a job seeker has called me excitedly to report, "They're flying me to New York City, tomorrow," without stopping to think: "Wait a second, they didn't ask me whether it was convenient for me to fly to New York City, now that I think about it." I know of one situation in which a candidate was pressured to fly to the company's headquarters on his wife's birthday. He was told, "If this isn't a priority for you, it isn't a priority for us, either." He wavered for an hour or two before telling them: "If my personal life and my most important relationship isn't important to you, I don't want to work for you." If they really want you, they can wait a day or two.
5) You're told you can't meet the team, or see the employee handbook, or meet clients (if appropriate) before an offer is extended.
This is a big, neon red flag that plenty of job seekers miss in the swirling colors of The Vortex. You need to meet your co-workers. Period. You need to see the employee handbook, which you'll be expected to adhere to during your tenure with the company and which will govern your working relationship. If you will work closely with a client at a senior level, it could make sense for you to meet with someone from the client's team before accepting the job. Ask yourself: Why wouldn't they let me meet the team or read the handbook? What is this employer afraid of?
6) All communication is funneled through the HR rep or the headhunter.
Practical matters, like interview times and paperwork flying back and forth, doesn't need to take up a hiring manager's time. It makes sense to have an HR point person or third-party recruiter handling communication with a candidate over these "mechanical" issues. But if you're really interested in a job and have a question for your prospective manager, the manager absolutely needs to take that call. If you can't get the manager's attention now, what makes you think you'll be able to when you work there?
Leave any of these six scary Vortex situations behind and don't look back—you'll have dodged a bullet. You have a lot to offer, and if an employer can't see it as the selection process unfolds, your talents are better used elsewhere.

If you're looking for the perfect job, you might as well stop right now: there's no such thing. But armed with the right information, you can get a good deal in a good place. Negotiating the job you want begins after you've learned how to be your own agent - after you've answered the tough personal questions and researched the company thoroughly.

Negotiating the job you want begins after you've learned how to be your own agent - after you've answered the tough personal questions and researched the company thoroughly.

Listen and answer first, ask questions later
Like the salary negotiation that follows it, the interview is a two-way process. The interviewer is gathering as much information about you as you are about the company. And a good interviewer will allow you to do most of the talking, so learn the difference between a quick question and one that requires a longer answer. In addition to listening to your answers, the interviewer may also be paying attention to how you budget your time in the interview.

In leading the conversation, the interviewer will cover essential information about the company, the responsibilities of the job, and other relevant material. Assume that the interviewer will answer most of your questions before you ask them, but ask your own questions at the end if anything is left hanging. Feel free to take notes and refer to them later.

Whatever you do, don't talk about money until the prospective employer puts an offer on the table. Until then, you have to convince them that you're a hot commodity. Once they're convinced, they will pay the fair amount it costs to get you. Let them make the first offer. Some interviewers will put pressure on you to disclose your current earnings, in the interest of determining whether they're in the right range. As your own agent, you should just keep stalling - remember that you are never required to give a salary history. Money talk is the subject of Part 4.

Steer toward a better job
If, in the middle of an interview, you realize the job isn't right for you, you have a choice. You could continue the interview, wasting both the interviewer's and your time. Or you could cut the interview short, leaving halfway through, and going home wondering "what if."

There is a third alternative. You could always try to steer the conversation toward something closer to the job you want, or encourage the organization to restructure the job so that it will appeal to you more. You have nothing to lose, especially if your skills are highly in demand. Companies with an entrepreneurial culture are especially likely to be receptive to this kind of win-win maneuver.

Focus on your contribution
As the agent of your own career, keep your focus on the contribution you can make to an organization. In the selling stage of your conversations with a prospective employer, you have an opportunity to show how your work will help create more value for the company and its shareholders. Your contribution will stand out if, in addition to meeting the basic criteria for the position, you also have added skills or experiences. Examples include a well developed network of contacts, direct industry experience, and specific technical expertise.

Check the fit
You might want to do research to find out what a company is like. You can also see for yourself, once you get to the interview, whether the company walks the way it talks. One way to judge what kind of candidate a company is really looking for is to ask some pointed questions, like:

* What kind of management style is most rewarded in this environment?
* How can I be sure I'm achieving the company's objectives here, as well as my own?
* How do you view work/life balance?
* Why is this position open? What happened to the person who previously held the job?
* What is the turnover rate for the position or department?
* How does the company communicate to its members? How often?
* When can I expect a performance review? What is the process?
* What professional qualities are most valued in team members?

Turn them into a buyer
The goal of the interview process is to make the prospective employer conclude not only that they want to hire you, but that you are exactly the candidate they are looking for. Every answer that creates this impression - every point you score in an interview - makes you more valuable to that employer, and thus more expensive. The interview not only sells your candidacy, but also lays the groundwork for the salary negotiation.

SIRIUS Satellite Radio broadcasts over 130 channels nationwide. Students will be given a tour of our state of the art studios located in the heart of midtown Manhattan. They will also hear about career paths within the industry as well as experiences from guest speakers. Students are encouraged to bring their resumes as we will accept applications to our internship program. Though the site visit is open to all, Sirius is specifically interested in underclass students in Communications and related fields. Their program will focus on internships.
